It was a quiet Tuesday night on September 30, 2025. Across Northern Cebu, the streets had fallen still, though a few lights remained glowing and some people were still awake. Families were settling into sleep, some already lost in dreams, others just about to switch off the lights.
Elsewhere, the province remained alive in its own gentle rhythm. In city centers, cafés and carinderias bustled with late-night diners. Groups of friends lingered outside convenience stores, chatting under the orange glow of streetlights. Others worked quietly from home on night shifts, while tricycle and jeepney drivers waited for their final passengers before heading back.
Then, without warning, a deep rumble rose from beneath the earth. A low, growing vibration shattered the calm. At exactly 9:59 in the evening, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck. The ground heaved violently; walls groaned, glass shattered, and power lines snapped, plunging towns into darkness. In mere seconds, a peaceful night descended into chaos.

Among the hardest-hit areas was Bogo City, near the quake’s epicenter. Surrounding towns—San Remigio, Tabogon, Medellin, and Daanbantayan—also suffered severe damage.
Yet amid the chaos and heartbreak, something remarkable began to unfold.
The Municipality of Daanbantayan, despite sustaining its own losses, became one of the first to respond with compassion and decisive action. After the Municipal Engineering Office and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) conducted an initial assessment of the town’s damage, Daanbantayan, under the directive of Mayor Gilbert Arrabis Jr., immediately mobilized aid at dawn on October 1.
Teams from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and BFP were deployed to Bogo City to conduct rescue and retrieval operations. They carried with them not only equipment and supplies, but also the spirit of bayanihan.

With homes damaged and hearts heavy, the rescuers worked hand in hand: digging through rubble, sharing what little they had, and crossing broken roads to lift others from despair.
When the dust finally settled, it wasn’t the destruction that people remembered most, but the unwavering light of a community that chose compassion over fear. Neighbor helped neighbor, town helped town. And in Daanbantayan’s case, help was given even as its own people were reeling, proving that even in the darkest moments, humanity can shine its brightest.
